Grand Tour Netherlands

In the Netherlands, the grand tour of chemical lives of young people was conducted in the capital city Amsterdam. We interviewed young (18-30) students, backpackers, cooks in restaurants and business men and women working in the business district in the south of Amsterdam. The fieldwork conducted amongst young cooks expanded to the middle sized city of Utrecht where additional interviews were conducted. In addition to the variety of groups of young people, we also focused on the use of chemicals in different spaces. Interviewing and participant observation were used to collect material at after parties, night clubs and festivals as well as monitoring and analyzing drug reports in virtual spaces. The range of substances and chemicals found amongst these groups and spaces included coffee, energy drinks, stimulant drugs (f.e. MDMA, cocaine, speed), cigarettes, vitamins, alcohol and hallucinogenics. The collected materials will be presented in a special issue published in Contemporary Drug Problems and will be titled ‘Harm Reduction from Below’, to be published in March 2016.
